What Is a GPS Speedometer?

A GPS speedometer uses your device's built-in satellite positioning to measure real-time movement speed. Unlike mechanical speedometers, a GPS-based meter works universally across any transport mode — on land, water, or in the air.

SpeedMeter.live delivers this in your browser. No installation. No account. No data leaves your device. Open the page, select your activity, and start measuring in seconds.

How Does It Work?

Your browser requests permission to access your GPS sensor. The Geolocation API streams position updates every 1–2 seconds. An exponential moving average (EMA) filter smooths out GPS noise for stable, readable values.

A 10-minute live speed graph and a unique minute-by-minute speed log table let you track and analyze your session in real time — then download everything as a signed chart.

Download Your Speed Chart — Shareable & Authentic

SpeedMeter.live is the only free online GPS speedometer that lets you download a verified speed chart as a JPEG image or PDF document. The downloaded file includes your full 10-minute speed graph, session statistics (current speed, peak speed, average speed, session time), activity mode, and a branded footer showing the SpeedMeter.live watermark, the date and time of the session, and a unique session ID — making it look and feel like an official, authenticated speed test result.

Why Would You Need This?

Imagine your friend just bought a new motorcycle and claims it can hit 180 km/h. Or a car enthusiast wants proof of their bike's top speed on a track day. Or a running coach wants a shareable performance record for their athlete. The downloadable speed chart solves all these scenarios:

Each downloaded chart is generated entirely on your device — your GPS data is never sent to our servers. The SpeedMeter.live branding, session timestamp, and unique session ID are added automatically to give the result an authentic, professional appearance that friends and followers will trust.

Supported Speed Units

Switch between five measurement units to cover every use case from everyday driving to professional maritime navigation.

UnitFull NameFrom m/sPrimary Use
km/hKilometers per hour× 3.6Cars, cycling, running — metric countries
mphMiles per hour× 2.237USA, UK, and imperial countries
m/sMeters per second× 1.0Science, engineering, athletics timing
knotsNautical miles per hour× 1.944Maritime, aviation, international standard
ft/sFeet per second× 3.281Imperial technical, ballistics, aviation

Supported Activity Modes

Each mode applies a tailored plausibility filter to prevent GPS spikes from skewing your statistics. A walking profile caps readings at 4 m/s; a car profile allows up to 90 m/s.

Tips for Best Accuracy

Signal Environment

GPS accuracy depends on satellite visibility. Use the tool outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Urban canyons degrade signal quality. Indoors, accuracy is significantly reduced.

Warm-Up Period

Allow 10–20 seconds after pressing Start for your device to acquire a strong GPS lock. The accuracy indicator in the cockpit bar shows your current signal quality in meters.

Best Time to Download the Chart

Download your speed chart at the end of a session for the most complete 10-minute graph. The branded PDF is ideal for sharing — it includes the session timestamp, your activity mode, peak speed, and the SpeedMeter.live verification footer.

Battery Considerations

Continuous GPS usage drains battery faster than normal. Enable Low Power Mode to reduce screen refresh rate during long sessions without affecting speed accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the GPS speedometer accurate?
Under good signal conditions, GPS speed accuracy is typically within 0.1–0.5 km/h. The tool applies EMA smoothing to further reduce noise. Accuracy degrades indoors or in dense urban environments.
Can I download my speed results?
Yes — tap "Download Chart (JPEG)" for a shareable image or "Download Chart (PDF)" for a printable document. Both include the full 10-minute graph, session statistics, activity mode, date/time, and a SpeedMeter.live authenticity footer. Everything is generated on your device; no data is uploaded.
What is the minute-by-minute table?
Below the graph, the tool shows a 10-cell table — one cell per minute of the session. Each cell counts down to the end of that minute, then locks in the average speed recorded during that 60-second window. This gives you a clean, scannable lap-by-lap record unique to SpeedMeter.live.
Why does it ask for location permission?
Speed measurement requires GPS, accessed via the browser's Geolocation API. If you denied permission, reset it via the lock icon in your browser's address bar → Location → Allow.
Does it work offline?
Once loaded, speed measurement uses only your device's GPS sensor — no ongoing internet connection is needed. The chart download also works fully offline.
Why is my speed reading 0 when moving slowly?
A stationary threshold of ~0.65 m/s (2.3 km/h) filters GPS drift. Very slow walking near this threshold may occasionally read as zero.
Is this tool free?
Completely free. SpeedMeter.live is supported by non-personalized, privacy-respecting advertising only. No location data is used for ads.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes — Safari on iOS 14+, Chrome/Firefox on Android. For iOS, ensure Location Services are enabled for Safari in device Settings.
